It sounds like you're on the right track, sorting 'ps' or 'top' by memory
usage and picking off items is where I'd start.

I don't know what desktop/window manager you're using (or which Fedora
includes, actually), but you have tried a more lightweight alternative?
Xfce is one I hear recommended regularly, it's pretty slick.  I still
won't give up Window Maker no matter how many iterations of hardware I go
through. ;)
