SYNC has nothing to do with compiling ... it's only used when running 
`emerge --sync` ...

alternatively, you could use `mirrorselect -i -r`, assuming you have the 
mirrorselect package installed ...

fiiiiiiiiiiiiiinally, if you simply delete SYNC from /etc/make.conf, there is 
a global default that should always work (in /etc/make.globals)
