Andy, Eric, and Mike, Andy nailed it with "/opt/gnome/bin/gnome-wm". That got the manager back up, which, in this case was metacity, as Mike suggested. Once that was fixed I was able to continue and get xgl running so I now have the rotating cube desktop and other effects. Thank you all for the quick responses. Tux has happy feet again :-) Bruce
