Alternatively, I was playing with Debian 3.1/Sarge on an Ultra 2 not too 
long ago, and I believe that newer versions of SILO will deal with gzipped 
kernels correctly.  I built a no-module kernel using all the hardware I 
knew I had and gzipped it, it ended up being a tad over 1 MB for my Ultra 
2-specific 2.4.34, and had no problem firing up from SILO.  Dmesg will 
give (the OP) a pretty good idea of what the generic kernel is seeing.
