Why not also try an emerge sync as opposed to exploding the latest
portage tarball.

More to what others are saying, my laptop that overheats has a similar
problem where it will tank under an enourmous load (the temp gets to
84C).  I never had a problem with the fan on the sparc so I never
replaced it.
