Are you sure that's the right model number?  I've got an Inspiron 8200, 
and I bet you're talking about an Inspiron 8100.  If that's the case, 
then you can try it out with my AC adapter.  If that works, he'll be 
looking for one of these:

If your friend can find a "service tag" number he can find a lot of 
information about how the laptop was configured when sold:

That doesn't have anything to do with the AC adapter; it's just nice to
